Slaithwaite pupils are buzzing with happiness after winning £1,000 for recycling over 100 mobile phones.

Over half of the 220 students at Nields Primary School bagged up 114 phones, after beginning their campaign several months ago.

Nields was one of 50 schools across Yorkshire who stepped up to the Smart Alec School Recycling Campaign, which was organised by Mytholmroyd-based Mobile Phone Recycling Organisation to encourage young people to recycle more in the area.

They will now be able to spend their winnings on computer related items so that students can remain at the cutting edge of technology.

Celebrating their win, staff member, Barbara Johnstone, said: “We were ecstatic to win the £1,000 and will be spending our winnings on iPads for the children as they were the ones who participated.

“The campaign has benefitted the school by teaching key lessons to the children in recycling as most of them didn’t even know mobile phones could be recycled and we would love to take part in the campaign again, which we expect to be relaunched in the coming months.”

Their haul has helped the campaign to repair, refurbish and resell over 1,000 phones from schools, along with help from Crosland Moor Junior School, Marsden Nursery and Infant School, Shelley College, St Thomas CE Primary School and Wellhouse Junior & Infant School.

MPRO’s General Manager, Johann Shepherd, said: “We were very pleased with the outcome of the campaign and can only hope that not only the pupils, but the parents and teachers acknowledged the potential in recycling old handsets.

“The scheme has proved both educational and environmentally informative with both recycling incentives as well as lessons on the wide world of commerce as pupils actually managed the commercial benefits to the school”.
