SEVERAL local buses serving Huddersfield areas are to be axed.

But some others which have proved to be more popular are to be extended and Metro deserves praise for setting up MetroLocal services which link residential areas with local shops and community facilities.

It’s a classic case of use them or lose them.

The Government is often trying to persuade car owners to leave their vehicles at home and take the bus or train instead.

But it will take some radical thinking to tempt more people from behind their steering wheels.

Many who use their cars day in and day out are quite shocked when they try public transport and realise how expensive and difficult to use it can be.

That, coupled with overcrowded trains and bus timetables dictated by the economic viability of the route, mean the politicians never seem to get any nearer to changing people’s driving habits.

The Government still has a long way to go on this one.
