THE battle to capture shoppers in the Holme Valley was stepped up last night.

Retail giant Morrisons confirmed it plans to almost double the size of its Meltham store – to wage war against Tesco, who plan a store in Holmfirth.

Full details of the Meltham plan are expected to be go on public display at the supermarket next week.

The Station Street store (right) is earmarked to grow from 13,242 sq ft to 24,107 sq ft, even though the site is limited.

That’s almost the exact size of the Tesco store planned for New Mill Road, Holmfirth – a plan which has attracted widespread opposition and support in equal numbers.

Those opposing the Tesco plans say it will harm trade in Holmfirth. But many people from across the Holme Valley already shop in Morrisons in Meltham.
