Students at a Dewsbury school have proved champion story-tellers.

The Year 7 students at Westborough High School won a school storywriting competition.

Seven schools, all part of the Wakefield Learning Community, reached the regional final held at the Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield. The aim of the competition was to write an adventure story to appeal to year six students. The group penned a novel called The Gossip Grannies about super hero grannies who save the world from an evil tyrant.

The book was created, illustrated and written by Hassan Rehman, Holly Loftus, Katie Halliday, Hamza Patel and Shamaila Akhtar. Teacher Martyn Large described the group’s presentation at the final as “engaging, witty and very informative.” He said the judges were impressed by the original nature of the work and likened it to that of author and comedian David Walliams.

The competition sponsors Engaging Education will now publish the book. The group was also presented with a trophy.
