WHY IS it that once again a small group of ‘financially interested’ people suddenly become so interested in traffic congestion in Holmfirth and our rural way of life?

We had the same selfish group complaining about Wetherspoon’s proposals for the Picturedrome. Anyone visiting Wetherspoons pubs in Harrogate, Brighouse or Llandudno, for example, would know what a smashing job they can make of redundant buildings and at the same time sell their products at reasonable prices.

Beer, pub food etc in Holmfirth pubs is on average more expensive than in other similar pubs in West Yorkshire as a result of the Wetherspoon snub.

Let’s have Tesco here, not that I rate them above any other supermarket chain, but the new supermarket will give us ordinary Holmfirth residents a better deal and save on fuel as well as the congestion we cause travelling to Meltham or Huddersfield.

Silent majority back new store

IT WAS nice to see someone (Meltham resident) writing what I am sure a huge silent majority thinks about a TESCO at Holmfirth.

It is always the small minority who shout the loudest and some of the objections are pathetic.

Quite a few years ago I worked in the Holme valley but had to do my shopping at Tesco’s in Huddersfield. I would have welcomed a branch in Holmfirth.

Brown will go on spending our cash

ASKING Mr G Brown to be fair to the people of this country (Mailbag, December 17) is like asking for it never to rain again.

Being a big chief in the Labour party means that as long as he can spend our money, he will continue to do so. For the past 10 years he has been having a field day. When he became the Chancellor in 1997 this country was one of the richest in the world but it didn’t take long to spend all we had.

Next came the sneaky taxes and the pinching from the pension funds, the selling of our gold reserves (when they were at their lowest) and now that he has spent all that he has started to borrow, whilst telling us that this is the only way to succeed.

Now that is off my chest (so to speak) the next thing is the General Election! People think that Labour won’t get in again but I think they will get in with a reduced majority, because the people that are getting all the easy money will not bite the hand that feeds them, and also the money that is given to the Scottish Parliament means that the Labour lot up there will help put him back in.

I am afraid there is no hope with any of the three main parties as they are all basically drinking from the same pot. What is needed in this country is another party that will put the ENGLISH people first and forget those that we appear to have dragging us back.

Overdue end to Summer Wine

HURRAH. The best news I have heard this year, the series is coming to an end.

Last of the Summer wine used to be funny, very funny in fact. But for the last 10 years or so it’s been more embarrassing than funny.

Tourists coming to visit the town have been conned for years thinking that by parking in the Crown Bottom car park they are going to find all the lovely sites they see on the television.

Old Holme Valleyers like myself know well the series is shot all around the Holme and Colne Valleys Greenfield, Uppermill and beyond. It’s time the town moved on and stopped trying to cash in on past glories.

In search of Tony Connolly

I AM trying to organise a school reunion in 2009 and would like to contact an old friend who lived in the Huddersfield area.

His name is Tony Connolly and we attended Verona Fathers (Roehead) from 1967 to 1973.

If he has moved and anyone knows of his whereabouts, could I ask them to pass on this message.

If they could contact me on 01229 839524 it would be very much appreciated.

Bin collection plans so wrong

SO, HALF of all Kirklees residents will have to wait three weeks before their next grey bin collection at a time when we will all be generating more rubbish because we are not at work or school.

If, like me, your grey bin was collected this week, it will not now be collected until week commencing January 5 – in three weeks’ time. Kirklees have said that they are putting on special collections over the festive period but this will be for my green bin. I don’t consider my non-rotting recyclable waste to be a priority.

I contacted Kirklees and was advised that they will collect extra bags of grey bin refuse left with the bin when they do collect the rubbish, but what are we supposed to do with it until then?

Leave it outside for the local wildlife to have their share of the Christmas festivities? I think not!

Grey bin collections over two weeks does work – but it will not stretch to three weeks.

Another completely impractical solution from Kirklees.
