DERIC Longden has played an important role in putting Huddersfield on the literary map.

As a result of his books – one of them turned into an Emmy award-winning TV drama – he has become known both here and overseas but now Deric has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

In true Deric style, although terribly shocked by the bad news, he continues to see the humorous side to life and that comes across brilliantly in today’s interview with the Examiner.

Deric’s books have highlighted two other illnesses that affect thousands of people and inspired people suffering from them.

Diana’s Story was about his first wife’s battle with ME while Lost For Words, told of life with his eccentric mother as she began to suffer increasingly from dementia.

Now Deric is facing his own battle but he can be assured he will be in the thoughts of thousands of Examiner readers.
