Children let their imaginations run wild to raise money for a bereavement charity.

The toddlers from Huddersfield played their part in a national event held on behalf of Once Upon A Smile.

The charity provides a source of support to families that have lost a child or children who have lost a parent to illness.

The sponsored events in the town were organised by theatre company Pyjama Drama.

The group held two sessions in Greenhead Park’s community room aimed at children aged under five.

During these they were encouraged to sing, dance, pretend and play.

The young participants were asked to get their friends and family to sponsor them.

Christine Hudson, manager and teacher at the local franchise, said that by joining in the children were giving a fantastic cause a boost.

She added: “It’s also a great way for young children to learn about the concept of fundraising and helping others less fortunate than themselves.”

The children learnt a special song and played five games which were all designed to ‘chase the blues away’.

Spring Cottage, which is based at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in Lindley, also participated.

Staff organised a session in their Sunflowers room with children aged three to five.

Nursery manager Cath Manning said that the children loved activities organised by the drama group.

She said: “This is a fantastic way for the children to help put a smile back on someone’s face while having fun themselves.”

Once Upon A Smile helps families by offering respite breaks.

It also provides financial help to families who may be struggling to pay bills as a result of losing a family member.

The charity was set up in 2011 by former Emmerdale star Danny Miller and his actor friend Daniel Jillings

Pyjama Drama held 25 events throughout the UK in support of the charity.

It has been running drama and imaginative play classes in Huddersfield for 18 months.
