Families, friends and children of all ages gathered under the shelter of the heated marquee to join their loved ones living at Tolson Grange Care Home in Dalton to experience a firework show.

Each year staff put on a small display with residents and families watching from the indoors.

However, this year, it was felt that people living with dementia in a care home and their families should not be deprived of the opportunity to fully experience this traditional night of sparkly magic.

With a heated marquee, hearty pie and peas, hot dogs for the kids, hot cuppas, slices of home-made parkin and the brilliant hospitality of the staff serving the goodies, Danielle and Katrina, the spectators were well equipped to enjoy the half hour or so family safe/dementia friendly firework show put on by activity co-ordinator, Craig Green.

The atmosphere was incredible as the crowd cheered, the fountains sprayed their kaleidoscope of colour and the children waved their wands of sparkle.

Judith, friend and guardian of resident Edwin Ellen said: “what an amazing night, a really wonderful experience for all”.

Moira Wade from Hoot Creative Arts, also a relative, enjoyed making shapes with the sparklers and also said what a brilliant night it was.

“We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who attended to make this night extra special”, she said.
