IT’S the worst possible news for another of the well-known names on our high streets.

And worst of all for the staff who face losing their jobs at Comet which has announced the business will be put into administration next week.

One of the country’s best known electrical chains is in trouble and two local stores may end up closing with 80 staff likely to lose their jobs in Huddersfield and Halifax.

Bleak days ahead then for those families as the retail sector, already hard hit, prepares to face perhaps more tough times.

It is four years since the demise of Woolworths and since then our high streets have lost many well-known names.

But the potential loss of Comet signals that the competition from online rivals continues to bite and that the easing of purse-strings reported by some big retailers is not helping everyone.

Comet has said that it is working on plans to secure the company’s future and it is expected that administrators will seek a buyer for the business.

Let’s hope that is possible and that if and when that happens, some of the expertise and value that lies in the staff at Comet will be taken on by any new owners.
