WAR veterans were honoured in the Colne Valley.

Marsden Royal British Legion organised the event last Friday in the run-up to Armed Forces Day.

Around 100 former soldiers aged between 42 and 90 enjoyed a rendition of Vera Lynn songs by Linda Stott.

Mayor of Kirklees Clr Eric Firth spoke at the event which was attended by veterans of the Second World War, the Korean War, the Falklands War, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Supper was provided by Andy Hirst, of Ashby’s Deli in Slaithwaite.

Event organiser Elizabeth Flannery said: “It was a fabulous afternoon and the food was superb.

“The mayor gave a speech thanking all the veterans for what they did for the country.

“Everyone went away very happy.”

The event was founded by former Colne Valley MP Kali Mountford eight years ago to recognise ex-service personnel who have not received awards for their service.
