A tiny village Women’s Institute group had the honour of hosting the centenary baton exchange.

South Pennine Group, which has members from Birdsedge, Denby Dale and Shepley, was chosen to host an event passing the baton from West Yorkshire Federation to the South Yorkshire Federation.

The WI is sending the baton to every federation in the country to mark 100 years since it was founded.

Dignitaries attending the event at Birdsedge Chapel included the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Dr Ingrid Roscoe and the Mayor of Kirklees, Clr Martyn Bolt, who presented prizes to local children who had designed special birthday cards for the WI.
