An initiative aimed at asylum seekers and refugees is celebrating a cash boost.

Members of the REACH project were presented with a cheque for £1,500 at the Marsh Co-op at Reed Street.

Based at New North Road Baptist Church, Huddersfield, the service offers information and support to people from all country.

For 11 years a drop-in session has been held on Tuesdays.

The project provides a safe meeting place for all to meet others in similar circumstances.

There is no charge for the hot lunch and self-service drinks.

Activities include pool, table football and toys and games for children.

Visitors can also be provided with bedding, request furniture and get help with form-filling and signposting to legal organisations.

There are currently 30 regular attendees at the facility at New North Parade.

They include people originating from Africa, Syria, Iran and Kuwait, together with families from Kosova and China.

Muslims, Christians and those of no faith are welcomed and encouraged to join in activities together.

As the number of destitute families have increased, the food bank is in great demand and difficult to replenish.

An interpreter is paid for by a Kirklees Council grant, but all other staff and members of the management committee are volunteers.

The church provides the basement room, kitchen and toilet facilities and receives annual reports.

The grant was provided by the Co-Operative Area Committee.

It will be used to cover running expenses such as bus fares, the cost of providing a hot meal each week and to replenish the food bank.
