MEMBERS of Brighouse Rotary Club will join families, fellow Rotarians and hospice supporters for a charity walk.

And they hope to beat the amount the charity walk raised last year for four local hospices – £18,000.

The canalside walk is 20 miles in total, but participants can walk as little or as much as they are able to.

Among those joining the canalside wander is the Rolinson family – Dave, Karen, Jess, 13, and Amy, 15, along with pet pooch Charlie, who will begin the walk in Elland.

Jessica, who will walk 16 miles of the course, said: “This is the longest walk I have ever undertaken but my dad assures me that it is flat along the canal as canals can’t go up hills,”

Nada Tokos, Olwen Edwards and Marina Simioli will also join the fundraiser.

Marina said: “We do one walk a year usually about 20 miles so decided to participate in this one this year and support the local hospices. We hope to start in Sowerby Bridge and finish in Horbury if our hips hold out.”

Rotarian Bill Sutton, chairman of the organising committee, said the walk had grown since it first started in 2011.

He said: “After raising nearly £8,000 at the first attempt, we decided to go several steps further and with the direct involvement of Brighouse, Elland and Sowerby Bridge Rotary Clubs, we were able to extend the walk from Horbury to Sowerby Bridge and gave walkers at least six walk distance options.

“We also ended up with support from a further five Rotary clubs who assisted with marshalling and increased the total number of walkers from 130 to 430.

“The extension also brought the opportunity to support an additional hospice – Overgate which serves the Calderdale area, but the common ground continues to be Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice which covers all three council districts.

“In 2012 we raised just under £18,000 which was divided equally between all four hospices.

“We all know the great work carried out by the hospices at a time when individuals and family need as much support as they can get and we are very aware that without contributions from the public through fund raising events the hospices could not function.”
