Linthwaite shop owner slams Government move to ban tobacco displays

warren05: “Alas the smokers are being attacked again. If smoking is so bad why not ban it totally? The reason the government won’t do this is because of the revenue it gets from sales of tobacco. The government constantly goes on about the cost to the NHS but yet the tax on tobacco is more than enough to cover the NHS costs. More than £4 on a packet of cigarettes is tax. The products cost very little to make.

“Why not leave the smokers alone for once and pick on obese people, alcoholics and drug abusers as those people cost the NHS more than smokers? If everyone in this country stopped smoking then this country would be in a worse mess than it already is!

HuddersFax_Resident: “This story is not about the concerns of the smoker, it is purely about the profits of the shop owner.

“The only thing the removal of the displays will do is drive smokers to buy cheaper and poorer quality cigarettes (if there is a quality of cigarette). In the end this will worsen the health of the smoker and worsen it quicker, putting more pressure on the NHS.

“Just like all the other Tory cuts to budgets, this is a poorly thought out plan with the only aim for short term gains to improve their image and which will cost more in the long run.”

Magdale: “Dear Mr Shopkeeper, I am afraid you will have to move with the times and start to stock other things to sell. The world changes. We once sent little boys up chimneys to clean them until legislation changed that for the better. Move on and peddle something else other than the cancer sticks you do now.”
