HAVING read a review in the Examiner last autumn of the Canton Chef, 17 Westgate Honley we visited this Chinese restaurant, which was taken over about 18 months ago by the Lau family.

We were impressed firstly by the cream decor with matching leather seats, then by all the staff smiling and greeting us.

The menu was suitably varied, with some unusual house specials begging to be sampled.

The food arrived promptly and was very pleasing on the eye, the porcelain adding very much to the effect. The soup was tasty but in a natural way, not the usual MSG gloup. The pan-fried king prawns with mince meat stuffing were an instant favourite.

The price is not excessive, although take- outs offer around 20% off. But for a first experience I fully recommend sitting and participating fully. Although if you like wine buy it by the bottle not the glass.

It is nice to leave feeling comfortable and not have to drink copious amounts due to the excessive salt, MSG and garlic. Recommendations and special requests are offered freely and we were remembered even on our second and subsequent visits. Thank heavens for good old-fashioned service, quality and standards.
