WHO best to believe about global warming? The overwhelming consensus of the world’s atmospheric scientists, drawn up after years of analysis and debate, published by the United Nations, and endorsed by governments of left and right alike? Or retired art gallery owner Gordon Hirst, who writes “I’m not expert, quite the reverse. I know very little about the science involved” (‘A senior moment’, April 25). It’s a tough choice, isn’t it?

Like Arthur Quarmby, Gordon believes “we are being conned”. But neither explains how this world-wide conspiracy of disinformation is maintained, who leads it or what motivates them. When will the conspiracy theorists name the guilty men? Will it turn out to be Osama bin Laden? Or will it be MI6, the French police and the Duke of Edinburgh?
