WIMBLEDON doubles champion Jonny Marray has visited Huddersfield’s ‘green club of the year’ Thongsbridge tennis club.
This rounded off a great year for the Holme Valley club.
The British tennis player, who was doubles champion at Wimbledon this year, delivered tennis masterclasses and took part in an exhibition match.
He was joined by ex-British Davis cup star Danny Sapsford, who was his doubles partner in an exhibition match against club coaches Alistaire MacGregor and Dan Sinclair.
Over 200 people watched the match as the doubles champion and ex-Davis cup star won a close fought three-set game.
The day also included an evening meal buffet and allowed club members to talk to the tennis stars and ask them questions.
Oliver Constance, Operations Director at Thongsbridge tennis club said: “It was an incredibly pleasant day and the standard of tennis on display was great.
“Jonny Marray is a very nice guy and it was nice to see he was so down to earth and success hasn’t changed him.”
Thongsbridge Tennis Club has seen great success this year, winning a number of awards in recent weeks for its Green initiatives.
The club’s green projects were recognised when the club was presented as the ‘Green Club of the Year’ at the Club Mirror awards in Manchester.
The tennis club has been working hard to reduce its carbon footprint since last December through a number of green projects.
The club has fitted new LED lights and light sensors as well as installing 204 new solar panels on the roof of the indoor courts in February.
Mr Constance said: “We were very proud to win the award for ‘Green Club of the Year’.
“It is nice to get some recognition, especially after all of the hard work that has been going on over the last year.
“Not only is being ‘Green’ good for the environment, it is also good for business. It is a no brainer really.”
The Thongsbridge club has over 1,000 members, aged from three upwards.
