Emley football club was forced to call off a match after high winds blew off one of the Welfare Ground’s floodlights.

AFC Emley chairman Terry Higgins said a floodlight attached to the stands had fallen on to the pitch during stormy weather last week.

The incident caused the club to postpone its development squad’s fixture against Ashton United last Thursday.

The development squad plays in the Lancashire League East.

Mr Higgins said: “It’s just dropped from the top of the stand on to the pitch at about the half way line.

“But we need to check they’re all safe now.

“Obviously it’s been very windy up in Emley all week so we haven’t been able to go up and check them.”
