RUNNERS at Wooldale Junior School are celebrating after becoming West Yorkshire Games 1500m champions.

The school’s year five girls team came first in the finals, held at Leeds Met Carnegie Sports Complex, on March 8.

The games were opened by Paralympic gold medallist Hannah Cockroft, who is an ambassador of the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice, at Brackenhall.

Indeed Wooldale’s girls cleared up at the tournament with Frances Keddie and her class mate Georgia Draper, taking first and second place respectively.

Also finishing in admirable positions were Georgina Moorhouse (5th) and Nyah Wynn (12th) and Ellie Robinson, who finished 28th despite losing a shoe in the boggy ground.

Wooldale boys also performed respectably with the year six boys’ team taking fourth place overall.

School sports co-ordinator Elisabeth Bounds said: “The pupils really enjoyed the event, meeting paralympic star Hannah Cockroft who opened the games, and hundreds of other talented young athletes from our county... I’m very proud of them.

“Frances won by about 50m. We’re very lucky to have some really talented runners. They could be national runners because they’re that good.”

Wooldale Junior School runners will be hoping to outrun athletes from other Holme Valley schools at the Neiley Races, organised by Holmfirth Harriers next month.
