Work has started on long-awaited repairs to Meltham Church clock.

Workmen have erected platforms all around the tower at St Bartholomew’s Church in the centre of the village.

And now they plan to carry out repairs on the historic clock, which has been in need of some TLC for a long time.

It’s all thanks to the generosity of local people.

They have come up with thousands of pounds for a fund to get the clock working on the Grade II listed church.

English Heritage had awarded £92,000 to the project which is expected to cost a total of £127,000.

Church secretary John Mitchell said: “It’s great news that work is to start. We have known for years the clock needed a lot of work.

“The top of the tower has a flat roof made of stone but it has never been lead lined so it has been left prone to rain water seeping in over the years.

“We hope the work on the actual clock face won’t be too costly to repair.

“It is brilliant that the money we needed has been raised in just six months. We haven’t quite hit the £35,000 mark yet but we know there are a number of events in the pipeline.

“I would like to thank all the people in the Meltham area who have been so generous”.

“One of the problems we have had is accessing the clock due to the deterioration of the tower.

The four clock faces stopped 12 months ago and are all on different times.

As well as providing a focal place of worship the church, which was built in 1788, also hosts mum and toddler groups, band and choir concerts and visits from local schools.

The latest fundraising event is planned for this Friday, December 6.

Meltham Sports and Community Centre in Mean Lane is hosting a Rock For The Clock event.

It features two bands, The Patriots and Pinstripe Assassins, who will play 50s, 60s and 70s music. Tickets cost £5.
