AN HEROIC soldier may lose a leg after being shot in Afghanistan.

Yorkshire Regiment trooper James Cairns, 22, will find out next week if doctors can save his badly-injured right leg – shattered by a Taliban sniper’s bullet.

But the brave former Newsome High School student – shot a month after arriving in Afghanistan – is adamant that even if the news is bad, he is prepared.

James said: “I just have to get on with it; it’s not that bad.

“Next week the doctors could decide to operate right then and there, or they may tell me that it would be better to keep my leg.

“If I have to have it off, it will only be below the knee and the doctors who I will see will be able to do lots of stuff to help.”
