Students have been donating and exchanging coats in Ashbrow to keep warm this winter.

The event organised by The Uniform Exchange was hosted in the Forest Classroom at Ashbrow School on Thursday.

And it is the first school coat swap since the initiative launched its winter appeal in October.

Kate France set up the Uniform Exchange in 2001.

But this winter is the first time a specific coats, hats and scarves drive has been carried out.

Items donated have been redistributed to children across Kirklees and it is also a great way of recycling unwanted clothes.

And the coat swap at Ashbrow is also a great way to get the whole school community involved.

Mum-of-two Kate said: “This is the first time I have gone into school for a specific coat swap.

“Parents have been invited to send winter coats to school ahead of the sale and children who have donated were given a raffle ticket to go into the sale first.

“ Due to financial pressures many parents cannot afford to provide their children with appropriate outdoor attire.

“To help alleviate this we desperately need donations of outgrown coats, hats, gloves, scarves, winter shoes/boots and tights.”

Kate said the project is building momentum and has seen more than 100 coats collected.

And she has been helped in the Uniform Exchange by Paddock Laundry Services who have kindly washed donated coats weekly free of charge.

Kate added: “To wash them at home isn’t practical when you have so many and it is great that a local business has helped us out.”

But to continue the scheme they desperately need more donations to allow further school swap sales.

To promote the Uniform Exchange Kate has sent 20,000 leaflets to schools, libraries and children’s centres across Huddersfield, hoping they will all get on board.
