A young scout is gearing up to take part in a fundraising Holme Moss cycle challenge.

Abby McLaughlin, who attends the 14th Huddersfield (Marsden) Scout Group, will tackle the notorious climb in a bid to raise more money to help her get to the World Scout Jamboree in Japan.

She will ride 21kms across Huddersfield before facing the 204 metre climb up winding roads with her mum Jaime on March 8.

But they want more fighting fit cyclists to join their peloton and help them reach the top.

Jaime, who lives with Abby, 15, in Woods Avenue in Marsden, said: “It’s going to be very tough, that’s for sure and we definitely need to get practising.

“We’re looking for as many people as possible to take on the challenge with us and support Abby.

“We plan to start early in the morning from Ainley Top and ride through Huddersfield to Woodhead Road, which will take us through Berry Brow, Holmfirth and to the start of the climb.

“I’m a bit nervous about tackling it but I’m sure it will be a great day for everyone who comes with us.”

Abby needs to raise over £3,400 to make her dream of travelling to Japan and meeting up with scouts from across the world come true.

So far she has raised around £3000 but only has until early summer to earn the rest before she hopes to set off in July.

Jaime said: “It will mean everything to her if she gets to go.

“As a single mum with three children it will also be the best thing that’s ever happened to us.

“She’s very interested in learning about different cultures and has already decided that she wants to travel the world after she’s been there.”
