Happily married - for 70 years

Platinum celebration for couple

YEAR OF THE WEDDING

WHEN Frank and Elsie tied the knot in 1933 major political events that would lead to World War Two were happening abroad.

* Adolf Hitler became German Chancellor, the Reichstag (German Parliament) burnt down, all political parties except the Nazi party were banned in Germany, the Gestapo police were established and Dachau concentration camp opened.

* Germany and Japan left the league of nations.

* On a merrier note, the US repealed the prohibition of alcohol which had characterised the American 1920s.

* Closer to home, the first trolley-buses began to carry thousands of passengers in Huddersfield.

* And the day before Frank and Elsie's wedding, the Prince of Wales - who would later become Duke of Windsor - visited Huddersfield Community Club in Dundas Street before travelling on to Penistone.
