RAIL fares are set to soar in the new year. Many rail companies are due to increase fares by an average of just under 5% – double the inflation rate. In some parts of the south-east of England fares could go up by a staggering 9%. Anthony Smith, Chief Executive of rail watchdog Passenger Focus, said: “A chill wind will blow down many of Britain’s platforms when passengers find out their new fares.
