A FORMER shopworker has celebrated her centenary.
Doris Garside turned 100 on December 29 and was “over the moon” about reaching the milestone.
Her son, Robert Garside, said: “She is the only person she or we know to reach 100. She has outlived all her friends, which is quite remarkable.
“She is over the moon about reaching 100.
“I hope there will be many more years to come and she will be happy and healthy in them.”
Her family threw her a special birthday party to mark the extra-special milestone.
On the day Mrs Garside was born the Liberal Henry Campbell-Bannerman was PM, the first man to be given official use of the title Prime Minister.
Mrs Garside worked in a warehouse and was a shopworker until she married husband George. Robert was the couple’s only son.
She has two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Her husband died 30 years ago.
Mrs Garside lives in Beaumont Park and enjoys doing crosswords and puzzles. She has family living throughout Huddersfield and loves spending time with them.
Mr Garside added: “When she had me she gave up working.
“That was the way it was back then, so she was at home being a mother and wife.
“But she enjoys spending time with her family, especially seeing her great-grandchildren.
“Her family are important; we always see each other.
“She also has a lot of friends, many of them in their 90s. And she loves chatting to people.
“She is more alert than I am!”
