Blood stocks critical

PEOPLE in Huddersfield are being urged to give blood after a shortage of donors over the festive period has led to critically low blood stocks.

Blood supply does traditionally dip at this time of year, but this year stocks are much lower than usual.

The high number of winter illnesses, particularly the highly contagious norovirus stomach bug, has meant that donors have been staying away.

Over three million people are estimated to have caught the bug, which causes vomiting and diarrhoea – double the number of cases seen last year according to the Health Protection Agency.

Blood stocks, which are vital for accident victims and patients having surgery, have been hit hard as donors struck down by the bug have missed their appointments. Doctors are also advising people to stay at home for 48 hours after symptoms have gone to cut the risk of the bug spreading.

The blood shortage has led to desperately-low stocks in hospitals.

Each month, 500 units of blood are needed in Huddersfield alone and the National Blood Service aims to have a seven day supply – yet our region currently has only a 4.8 day supply.

To find out how to become a donor and make an appointment contact the service on 0845 7711 711 or visit www.blood.co.uk

The next donor session in Huddersfield is on January 28 at the Methodist Mission at Lord Street from 2 to 4pm and 5 to 7.30pm.
