The signs are there for public to help!

THE Friends of Longley Woods group is to involve the community in creating signs for an urban woodland.

The Friends, together with environmental artist Cate Clark, are to design signs for the woods in summer. The signs will mark entrances to the woods.

Planning for the project – paid for by Lottery and Kirklees Council grants – has already begun and workshops will take place over the next few months for schools and community.

Cate will work with schools and groups to design the signs.

Ms Clark, who designed a sign for Dalton Bank Nature Reserve, said “I want the project to involve lots of children and adults, to help people to value this special place.

“Once the signs are in place I hope they will attract others as well to come along and enjoy these fantastic woods.”

Longley Woods are a nature reserve five minutes from Huddersfield town centre. There are mature trees, sunken lanes and the remains of an old quarry, along with wildflowers and birds.

The Friends have been working over the last few years to improve footpaths, clear litter, plant daffodils and put up bird and bat boxes.

Founder member Stephen Priest said “Longley Woods are for the community, an asset right on our doorstep.”
