A TOP councillor has stepped down.
Clr Martyn Bolt announced at the council’s Cabinet meeting that he is leaving.
The Mirfield Conservative had been responsible for highways and the environment.
He has taken up a position as cycling development officer at CTC, the UK’s cycling organisation.
Clr Bolt said: “Anyone who knows me and my passion for cycling will understand my excitement at obtaining this new role, and it is an opportunity I cannot turn down.
“I would have liked to have continued in my role as a Cabinet member – to which I was heavily committed – because it is something from which I have gained a great deal of pleasure.
“Unfortunately it is impossible to combine both roles because of time constraints.”
Clr Bolt will continue to represent Mirfield on the council.
Council leader Clr Robert Light paid tribute to his outgoing colleague.
He said: “I am very sad to see Martyn step down. He is an excellent councillor and has done a fantastic job in the Cabinet with what is a massive and varied portfolio.
“His contribution to Cabinet debate and decision making will certainly be missed, but Martyn will continue to play a full role within the Conservative group as he has always done.”
The Cabinet will seek permission to split Clr Bolt’s responsibilities between Clr Light, Clr David Hall and Clr AndrewPalfreeman on a short-term basis.
