The RSPCA is appealing for information after five tiny puppies were found abandoned near Batley.
The six-week-old pups – believed to be Collies – were discovered last Saturday next to a footpath on Field Head Lane at Birstall.
A passer-by spotted the lively bunch playing alone in a field next to the path.
RSPCA inspector Mandi Barr was called to help rescue them and found none were wearing collars or had microchips.
The healthy pups were taken to the RSPCA Halifax and District Branch Animal Centre where they are currently being cared for.
Mandi said: “It’s shocking that anyone could abandon any animal in this way, especially such young puppies.
“They were all in good physical condition, which suggests they may have once belonged to someone.
“Because they were found together it seems unlikely they found their own way there. It’s more probable they were deliberately left by the footpath. Had we not been contacted so early the puppies could have come to all sorts of harm. We’re now just hoping someone will come forward with vital information to help us discover what happened.
“If anyone knows who these puppies may once have belonged to we would urge them to contact us as soon as possible.”
The puppies were made up of one black and white-coloured female, two black, white and tan-coloured females and two black, white and tan-coloured males.
Anyone with any information should contact the RSPCA National Cruelty and Advice Line on 0300 123 4999.
All five are expected to be ready and available to be re-homed from tomorrow.
Anyone wanting to offer the pups a new home can call the RSPCA Halifax and District Branch direct on 01422 365628.
