AN Almondbury school chef has narrowly missed out on securing a place in a national competition. Simon Flood, kitchen manager at King James’s High School, battled it out against seven other chefs in the East of England final of School Chef of the Year 2008. Simon, 38, cooked-up a feast of fruity Moroccan chicken and baked egg custard tart in the contest, held in Nottingham. He lost out to school cook Dawn Dale from Whitby. Read

USA: A rare white killer whale has been spotted by ocean scientists off Alaska. It was discovered by the Oscar Dyson, a US research ship conducting an acoustic survey in the Aleutian Islands. ITALY: A British tourist whose body was found in Venice, died of accidental drowning, an inquest found yesterday. Richard Raynor, 23, from Retford, Notts, was discovered in Venice’s lagoon after going missing during a romantic Valentine’s break with his girlfriend last month. An inquest at Nottinghamshire Coroner’s Court heard that a letter sent by a mystery stranger who supposedly confessed to killing Mr Raynor is thought by Italian police to be a hoax. Read
