Call for urgent work on M-way link road

A MAJOR road used by thousands of Huddersfield drivers could be in line for repair work.

Clr Tony Brice wants Kirklees Council to resurface Halifax Road, which links Huddersfield to the M62.

The Lindley Conservative councillor said: “I’ve had quite a lot of complaints about the road.

“It’s not in a good condition considering it’s a major road which carries a lot of traffic.”

Clr Brice believes more money should be spent on roads in his ward.

He said: “My priority is to make the roads in Lindley the best in the town. In particular, I think the roads connecting Huddersfield to the motorway should be brought up to an acceptable standard.”

The road runs through Edgerton and Birchencliffe to link up with the busy Ainley Top roundabouts. Thousands of motorists use it to get to and from the M62 and to travel to and from Halifax.

Clr David Hall, acting Kirklees Cabinet member for highways, inspected Halifax Road yesterday.

Clr Brice said: “He was quite surprised at how bad the road was.”

The Conservative Cabinet will consider whether to fund the resurfacing work.

Clr Brice said: “Now that Clr Hall has had a look at the road, I think he will support the funding. There should be a decision sometime next month and I’ll attend the Cabinet meeting to urge that the work goes ahead.”
