Lambert leads way as Royds take title

ROYDS HALL B were crowned the Division IV Champions after defeating Fartown C 6-3.
The victory also ensured Royds Hall were the only team in the Huddersfield and District Badminton League to win every match this season.
Helen Lambert was the heroine for the visitors, winning all three of her games to ensure Royds Hall finished with a 100% record.
Mens – Ivan Ford and Anthony Hartley lost to Peter Goldthorpe and Mike Lyne 20-22, 19-21; Ford and John Holmes lost to Goldthorpe and Issy Caffoor 21-13, 19-21, 17-21; A Hartley and Holmes beat Lyne and Caffoor 21-13, 26-24.
Ladies – Mel Hartley and Barbara Horsman beat Carol Holberry and Sue Jessop 25-27, 21-15, 21-14; M Hartley and Sera Griffiths lost to Holberry and Helen Lambert 13-21, 10,21, Horsman and Griffiths lost to Jessop and Lambert 13-21, 16-21.
Mixed – Ford and Horsman beat Goldthorpe and Jessop 21-15, 21-11; A Hartley and M Hartley lost to Lyne and Holberry, Holmes and Griffiths lost to Caffoor and Lambert 16-21, 21-18, 19-21.
ROYDS HALL E tasted victory for the first time this term, beating Fartown D 5-4 in their final game.
Royds got off to a flying start winning all of the men’s games and one of the ladies, meaning one victory in the mixed would ensure they broke their season-long duck.
Their first win in Division VI was confirmed in the opening rubber of the mixed doubles thanks to No1 pairing James Smith and Andrea Caffoor.
Mens – James Smith and Peter Walter beat Taj Mustafa and Steve Bell 21-17, 21-15; Smith and Gilbert Pufal beat Mustafa and Jim Peck; Walter and Pufal beat Bell and Peck 21-12, 12-21, 21-17.
Ladies – Andrea Caffoor and Eileen Kenny lost to Nerys Williams and Julie Williams 9-21, 8-21; Caffoor and Merilyn Cato-Bedeau beat N.Williams and Gemma Titterington 21-17, 21-16; Kenny and Cato-Bedeau lost to J Williams and Titterington 13-21, 22-24.
Mixed – Smith and Caffoor beat Mustafa and N Williams 21-15, 21-12; Walter and Cato-Bedeau lost to Bell and J Williams 17-21, 13-21; Pufal and Kenny lost to Peck and Titterington 18-21, 24-26.
Ossett Sports gained revenge over Holmfirth E for their defeat earlier in the season, winning 5-4 in Division IV.
Mens – Andy McGowan and Arthur Whitworth beat Tony Fox and Phil Hemingway 22-20, 17-21, 21-10; McGowan and Derek Thompson lost to Fox and Steve Rayner 15-21, 19-21; Whitworth and Thompson beat Hemingway and Rayner 21-10, 16-21, 21-16.
Ladies – Kay Boothroyd and Janet Winn lost to Deanne Whitehead and Judith Halliwell 14-21, 12-21; Boothroyd and Hilary Mosely lost to Whitehead and Trish Hattersley 21-23, 21-19, 24-26; Winn and Mosely beat Halliwell and Hattersley 21-17, 24-22.
Mixed – Boothroyd and McGowan lost to Fox and Whitehead 9-21, 8-21; Whitworth and Winn lost to Hemingway and Halliwell 19-21,16-21; Thompson and Mosely beat Rayner and Hattersley 22-20, 21-11.
