‘World Cup’ comes to Huddersfield!
HUDDERSFIELD has hosted a mini-World Cup.
Twelve teams made up of people from around the world took part in a five-a-side tournament.
The event at Soccer City in Waterloo featured teams of Poles, Kurds, Somalis, Ethiopians and Iranians. There were also several mixed sides and a team from the police.
The event was organised by Daner Nuhman, who works for the Cultures United group, which is based in the St Patrick’s Centre.
He said: “Football helps to bring people together so the tournament was a step towards integration.”
The tournament was won by Arsenal 2, one of three Kurdish teams who took part.
Daner hopes to run more football competitions. He said: “I would like to have a tournament every two or three months. I hope the next one will be bigger.”
