Barbie girls head for Premiership pitch

A GIRLS football team will walk out on to a Premiership pitch after winning a football tournament prize.

The Barbie Group, from Huddersfield, is a team of young girls formed to get them involved in more sports. Now, two years after they got together, the team will play at Birmingham City’s football ground.

Team coach Leroy David said: “We got these girls who usually wouldn’t get involved in sport together and formed a football team.

“It was something they were all interested in doing.

“I am really proud of them, especially because they won the award based on the positive attitude and by working together as part of a team.

“I hope now we can go to Birmingham and win the tournament.”

The Barbie Group played in a Leeds football tournament called Your Game and were named as the winners of the fair play award. It earned them a place at a national football tournament at Birmingham City’s ground on May 18.

The girls, aged 13 to 19, train every week at Colne Valley High School and compete against other girls’ football teams.
