FIREFIGHTERS have tackled their second major moorland fire in the Scammonden area in a week. Crews from Slaithwaite, Huddersfield, Elland, Halifax and even Fairweather Green in Bradford tackled the large blaze near to Cupwith Reservoir off New Hey Road on Friday evening. They spent four hours dousing the flames which covered an area of half a square mile. The fire was spotted at 5.30pm. A big fire on moorland nearby on Wednesday night saw dozens of firefighters dousing the flames and beating the burning bracken out between 7pm and 2am the following morning. Read

A MAN fell asleep while smoking and set his flat on fire. He woke up in the armchair at his Sheepridge home to find the seat on fire at 7.10pm on Friday. The man in his 40s escaped unhurt from the first floor flat on Wiggan Lane after he was woken up by a fire detector fitted previously by firefighters during a free home safety check. The fire wrecked the chair and badly damaged the lounge with heat and smoke. The rest of the flat was smoke-damaged. Read
