A MYSTERIOUS stone head has been unearthed in Dalton.

The head, wearing a turban and blindfold, was discovered by 14-year-old Emma Clarke.

Now Emma, her mother Elaine, 37, and her colleagues at Rawthorpe Infant School want the help of experts in findings the origins of the mysterious sculpture.

Emma, a pupil of Rawthorpe High School, was playing on the site of former shops on Harpe Inge when she stumbled on a stone object.

Curious Emma dug the heavy carving from the site – which is to become a library – and took it home.

The shops have just been demolished by Kirklees Council who plan a new library and information centre on the site.

The shops and houses were built in 1948.

Emma’s mother, who was brought up in Dalton, was none the wiser to the strange stonework and her colleagues were equally baffled by the giant head.

Mrs Clarke, a teaching assistant, said: "I thought: ‘What on Earth is that?’ I’ve never seen anything like that in my life.

"I’ve no idea what it is or where it’s come from. I don’t want to use it as an ornament in my garden because it might belong to someone.

"It could have been attached to a garden post or a pillar.

"We’re all intrigued. If anyone can enlighten us about what it is, or where it belongs, and how it came to Harpe Inge, we’d love to know."
