LEARNING THE OLYMPIC SPIRIT
With the approach of the Olympic Games pupils at South Crosland C of E Junior School have been trying more sports. HAZEL ETTIENNE reports.
FORGET 2012 – the Olympics have come early to a village school!
South Crosland C of E Junior School is keen on keeping its pupils happy and healthy and staged a whole week of activities aimed at promoting that message.
The Fitness for Life Week at the Netherton school included a range of activities.
In the spirit of the Olympics each class took on the identity of a country including the USA, France, Greece, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Russia and Spain
And an Amazing Athlete Award recognised pupils with outstanding ability.
Head teacher Carolyn Booth said: “After receiving the Kirklees Health School Award we were keen at school to promote healthy minds and healthy bodies.
“Every academic year we have two off-timetable weeks, one with a more academic and one with an active theme.
“Our strong community links mean we have invited lots of people into school from a variety of sports organisations and we hope that many of our children will continue these activities outside the school timetable.”
As part of the school’s healthy ethos it has also devised a travel plan to encourage more children to walk to school with their parents.
