Police turn silencers

POLICE have again targeted car “cruisers”.

Officers in Dewsbury mounted another day of action against drivers – many of them young men – riding round the centre with music blasting out.

The Traffic Days of Action began at the end of June after concerns by shopkeepers.

Sgt Claire Archer, of the Dewsbury Neighbourhood Policing Team, says they are determined to make a difference.

“We mounted a two-hour operation and again we saw some good results.

“Fifteen fixed-penalty notices were issued for not wearing seat belts. These included drivers, passengers and children in the back.

“Five people were also asked to produce documents.

“One of the key issues we have been hearing is that shoppers are feeling intimidated by vehicles blasting out music.

“These vehicles can put people off visiting the town and is behaviour which we are not prepared to accept.

“We issued 17 warnings for loud music. Hopefully these drivers will start to get the message.”
