Station help for disabled

PEOPLE in wheelchairs could have easier access to Huddersfield railway station.

Work to improve access for people with limited mobility will begin this year.

Lifts will be installed at either end of the pedestrian subway which runs under the tracks.

The work by Network Rail is due to be complete by next spring, bringing the station in line with the 2004 Disability Discrimination Act.

Metro spokesman Neil Holt said: “This is good news for passengers.”

But Clr Martyn Bolt called for similar work at Mirfield station.

The Conservative, who represents the town on Kirklees, said: “Accessibility for Leeds-bound passengers is abysmal. I’d like to see a schedule to show when the major works are to be done at each station in Kirklees.
