RESTORATION work has started on a Huddersfield landmark.

Workers are strengthening Nab End Tower in Longwood.

Kirklees Council is spending £200,000 on the near-150-year-old building, which hosts the annual Longwood Sing.

Experts are strapping the exterior of the building to prevent it from falling before injecting grouting materials to stabilise the inside of the tower.

The outside will then be faced to complete the repairs.

Local historian Brian Hollingworth has been photographing the progress of the work.

The Salendine Nook man said: “The restoration is essential and I’m sure the tower will look lovely when it’s finished.”

Nab End Tower was built in 1861 by unemployed workers.

Brian, who was born in Longwood, added: “It’s an amazing achievement that it’s still there after all this time.”
