Firemen wake occupier

A MAN slept through a smoke detector going off – and firefighters breaking into his Huddersfield flat.

He woke from his deep slumbers only as they sorted out burning food that had cooked to a blackened mass in his microwave.

The alarm at the flats on Belgrave Terrace in Highfields came in at 6.45pm on Friday after a neighbour in the flat below noticed smoke spiralling in through the air vent.

At that point the smoke detector began to go off which led firefighters to the flat above.

They had to force entry and discovered smoke coming from the microwave.

The man living there was asleep on his settee and only then started to wake up.

Watch Manager Andy Crowther from Huddersfield fire station said: “There was nothing left of the meal and it had only caused slight smoke damage.

“But it shows again the potential again of leaving cooking unattended which has led to fatalities in the past.’’
