A PASSENGER injured in a crash in Birkby remains in hospital with neck injuries. The man, who has not been named, was the front seat passenger in a gold-coloured Toyota Yaris that smashed through a hoarding on Blacker Road at 8.20pm on Monday evening and then hit a mud bank before careering back through the hoarding and rolling over. The driver was arrested later and is now on police bail pending further inquiries. Five people – three men and two women – were in the car. Three were not badly hurt, but a man in the back seat suffered a facial cut that has needed specialist treatment at Bradford Royal Infirmary. The passenger with neck injuries has had surgery at Leeds General Hospital and is in a comfortable condition. Read

A boy from Yorkshire had to be airlifted to hospital after falling into a ravine on a group trip to a remote Scottish island. The 13-year-old fell while exploring on the uninhabited island of Scarba off the west coast. He is thought to have a broken leg.. A helicopter crew from Prestwick went to the scene before asking for help from Coastguards. The boy, one of 13 on the trip, was then flown to hospital in Paisley. Read

TRAVELLERS camped at New Mill have been given until tomorrow to move. The group was yesterday served with an eviction order from Huddersfield Magistrates. Travellers arrived in New Mill on Wednesday after leaving the former Midlothian garage site in Holmfirth. Five caravans and several other vehicles were yesterday still in a Kirklees Council-owned field next to a children’s play area off Holmfirth Road. Holme Valley South Councillor Ken Sims said: “We envisage them going by Friday. If they don’t go by then we will have to tow them off but we don’t want to do that.” Read
