HUDDERSFIELD safety campaigner Stacey Rodgers is urging people to get their heating systems serviced while the summer weather is here.

Stacey, from Deighton, lost her 10-year-old son Dominic four years ago to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Fumes from a faulty boiler in the property next door to their Fartown home seeped into Dominic’s room and killed him.

Since then, Stacey has campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide and urged people to take steps to prevent tragedy.

One of these steps is to make surefuel appliances, such as boilers, are regularly serviced.

The summer months are an ideal time to do this, as most people do not have their heating on.

Stacey said: “This is a really good time to call someone out to check that everything’s working safely and properly. ”

Appliances should be checked by registered Corgi contractors to make sure they are burning their fossil fuel completely and not giving off the deadly gas.

As well as servicing appliances, people are advised to get an audible carbon monoxide detector installed in their homes – DIY shops sell them for around £20 to £30.

If you are a homeowner, you can find a list of Corgi registered contractors by calling the helpline on 0800 915 0485. You can expect to pay around £40 for a safety check.

If you rent your home privately, your landlord has a duty to have appliances gas safety checked.
