Digging up a road - which is brand new
RESIDENTS of a road in Fenay Bridge were delighted when it was finally re-surfaced, after running a long campaign.
But a week after the work finished, Yorkshire Water has dug a section of it up again.
A burst water main caused masses of water to flood out on to the newly-laid road at the bottom of Station Road.
Several metres of the road surface were dug up as workmen battled to fix the water pipe.
But it is has left a large hole in the new road.
Resident Gordon Hirst said: “We have just had a brand new road which was almost complete, it had two surfaces on and just needed the finishing touches.
“But now it has been dug up again and a lot of water is coming up out of the road.
“It has left a hole in this new road which had just been re-laid.
“It is fair to say that the problems have been going on for a considerable time.”
Residents say there are underground streams which have been disturbed and for years the lower part of the road has suffered from surface water.
They now fear it will be a while before the road is repaired and put back to the newly-surfaced condition it was in.
Mr Hirst said: “It seems such a shame that it should have happened just when we’ve had a new road surface.
“We’ve been campaigning for a long, long time for this to happen, only for it to be dug up as the improvements came.”
