'Disabled' man worked as a sports ground steward

A SPORTS stadium steward falsely claimed £11,000 of benefits.

Peter Wynn, of Orchard Street, Primrose Hill, was given a 12-month community order.

At Huddersfield Magistrates’ Court he admitted claiming benefits while working at Halifax Town’s ground, The Shay.

The court was told that Wynn, 50, stewarded at football and rugby league matches while claiming income support and disability living allowance.

Prosecutor Malcolm Parkinson said: “He has pleaded guilty because he knows he was wrong and he worked between 2002 and 2004.

“The amount of the overpayment is in the region of £11,000.”

Wynn’s counsel, Amjid Mahmood, said his client was a full-time carer for his wife, who was partially blind.

He said it was the first time Wynn had been in trouble and told the magistrates: “You have the option of sending him to prison, but that wouldn’t address his offending behaviour.

“It would alienate him from his family and destroy his family life.”

Wynn admitted two charges of falsely obtaining benefit.

He was ordered to carry out 150 hours community work and remain under supervision for the next 12 months.
