WAS that it?

Britain’s soggy summer is perfectly summed up in these two photos.

Examiner photographer Peter Cottle captured this stunning image of a rainbow – arcing through a black sky over Ash Lane, Emley – and colleague Paul Welsh captured this image of dark forbidding clouds above Newsome.

And heavy rain again put a dampener on Huddersfield spirits.

Weather forecasters predicted more rain to come for the rest of the week and the weekend, and Huddersfield meteorologist Julie Walker confirmed what we all knew: Summer 2008 has been a washout.

Julie, of the School of Applied Sciences at the University of Huddersfield, has been helping to keep a check on the town’s weather for years.

Her August figures make miserable reading.
