St George's Chinese granite: Red Square-up

A HOLMFIRTH councillor has staunchly defended the controversial revamp of a Huddersfield landmark.

Clr Ken Sims was fiercely criticised at the monthly meeting of Kirklees Council for allowing pink Chinese granite to be used in the £4m redevelopment of St George’s Square.

But the Conservative Cabinet member for regeneration stuck to his guns, saying he was “101%” behind the ongoing work.

Kirklees is currently installing 750 tonnes of Chinese granite in St George’s Square at a cost of £215,000.

Stones already laid outside the Head of Steam are a patchwork of grey, pink and white in contrast to the surrounding beige Yorkstone.
