Roads flooded in Huddersfield as storms hit region

An agency spokesman said: “We are doing everything possible to identify key risk areas and protect local communities.

“Our staff have been manning incident rooms around the clock and supporting the emergency services and the local authorities on the ground.

“We are urging people in affected areas, especially the North-East region – which includes West Yorkshire – to be vigilant.”

The biggest risk to Kirklees peoples was surface water rather than rivers bursting their banks.

But most of it had cleared by mid-day yesterday and the risk was reduced.

Flooding also hit other parts of West Yorkshire and the North-East.

Meanwhile, the torrential rains which lashed the country over the weekend may have eased off, but forecasters warned of more floods to come.

Today’s clear skies are likely to be the calm before another storm.
