A Square world

THERE are things certain to get a Huddersfieldian (is that the correct word?) hot under the collar.

The non-removal of a full bin, the selling out of pies at Jones the Butcher in Marsh and Stan Ternent promising everything will be alright on the night at the Galpharm.

But more than any other thing over the past few months it has been the subject of Chinese granite in St George’s Square.

The debate has been rumbling on for a few weeks now and is still splitting opinions.

Despondent wanted to know: “Has the new paving been picked because it has special anti chewing gum properties? I can’t think of any other reason, it’s hideous.”

Tigger got the idea and came back with: “Perhaps they are hoping that Bazooka Joe bubblegum makes a comeback – it will blend in nicely.”

Otis took the lead. He said; “I went into the Square on purpose to have a look what all the fuss was about. I thought the paving outside Bramleys looked very well, it’s brown stone.

“While I was looking at the new pink stuff, a gentleman stopped beside me, snorted and said he now refers to it as ‘Red Square’

“I shall reserve judgement until the job is finished to see if it fits in.

“If it turns out too bright I think we may have to pay for a pair of sunglasses for Harold.

“One other thing I would like to know, and this is provoked by a letter in the Examiner, Kirklees councillors are trying to justify their spendthrift actions by claiming the public voted for change, not necessarily a pink change I think. When they offered this vote, was there an option to leave the Square as it was?”

1Gemini added: “Well finally there is a person who will reserve his opinion until the job is completed.

“I agree with you. There should have been an option to keep the Square as it was. When voting on this issue my Dad said he crossed all the options out and put ‘None of the above.’

He asked why they couldn’t keep it the same and somebody said it costs too much money to repair.

“All the councillors could have given their opinion on this issue before voting for the Chinese granite and they DIDN'T.”
